Our souls...we cannot see them, we merely sense that there is more than flesh and blood and bones! It's something beyond measurement and yet something, the existence of which is beyond denial.
Our souls, so legend has it, are but splinters of the ancient ones, insignificant to those of beings that once controlled the fate of our universe, more powerful than we could ever imagine. But legend also tells of their undying restlessness and their unending search for answers to their questions.
Until they found them... each one of them a different one. Upon their realization of the existence of different truths they would start to dispute, which of those was the one ultimate truth. Until eventually a terrible storm of hatred would rage among them, this led into a war which almost annihilated their entire population.
How all this relates to us, the legends do not tell. Only that our souls are all that's left of those fallen ancients; tiny fragments, scattered throughout the universe.
