Tullut oli koolle kansa tuomaan touko-uhrejaan
vetten, vaarain partahilta kautta suuren Suomenmaan,
tullut oli nuoret, vanhat vakkojansa tuomahan,
pyhän Päivävuoren päällä Ukon maljan juomahan.

säe II:
Tuolla tammipuiden alla urhot vanhat tarinoi,
täällä kummun tanterella nuori kansa karkeloi;
siellä istui Ilmariset, haastoi Väinöt harmahat,
täällä leikki Lemminkäiset, astui Ainot armahat.

bridge:
Meri aaltos vaaran alla, päivä paistoi päällä veen,
käkö kukkui kultasuulla, tammet huojui hiljakseen,
rastas lauloi rannan puussa, sotka salmen suussa sous -
silloin heimon valtavanhin tarttui maljahan ja nous:

kerto:
”Oi Ukko ylijumala,
hattarojen hallitsija,
iätä iästä pilvi,
nosta lonka luotehesta,
vihmo vettä taivahasta,
mettä pilvistä pirota
orahille nouseville,
touoille tohiseville!”

kerto II:
Näinpä lausui heimon vanhin, kansa Ukon maljan joi,
vanhat haastoi harvaksensa, nuori kansa karkeloi;

säe III:
Silloin nousi outo purje ulko-ulapalta,
laiva kohti Suomen saarta laski lännen alta;
urhot tuota ensin luuli allin ampujaksi,
naiset kaupin haahdeksi ja saksan haljakaksi.

säe IV:
Katsottihin, vuotettihin, niin jo nousi toinen,
nousi toinen, nousi kolmas purje yhden moinen.
Vaan kun koko taivon ranta välkkyi valkealta,
silloin ties he vainolaisen tulleen lännen alta.


bridge II:
Silloin vanha vaiti jäi ja lakkas laulu nuoren,
kotihinsa kansa riensi päältä Päivävuoren;
kohta joka kukkulalta vainoliekit nousi,
kautta suurten Suomen vetten sotapurret sousi.

English translation:

Chapter IV: The Toast of Ukko (Pyres of Warning)

verse:
The folk had came, meeting to bring their spring-offerings
from the waters, from the bordering woods of the grand land of Finland,
The youth had came, elders to bring their due,
on the sacred Päivävuori to drink the toast of Ukko.

Verse II:
There under the oaks old heroes told their stories,
there on the hilltop the young folk made merry;
there sat the smithsmen, elders told their lore,
there played the wild youth, lovely wives went.

Bridge:
Seas waved below the wild, day shone on the water,
cuckoo cuckood' with its' golden beak, oaks swayed slowly,
thrush sang on a beach tree, geese swam the strait -
then the eldest of the tribe took the cup and rose:

chorus:
“Oh Ukko the highest,
ruler of the wisps
seed a cloud from the east,
a haze from the south-west,
pour water from the skies,
squeeze the nectar of the mists
for the rising ryes,
for the rustling fields!”

chorus II:
Thus said the eldest, the people took the toast of Ukko,
the old took a solemn stance, the young made merry;

Verse III:
Then rose a strange sail from the outer ocean,
a ship towards Finland down from the west;
the brave thought a poachers' boat,
the women a trading ship or a German herald.

Verse IV:
Watching, waiting, so rose a second,
rose a second, rose a third sail, shape the same.
But when the horizon flashed as white,
then knew they – invaders with the western wind.

Bridge II:

Then elders stayed silent and stopped the song of youth,
to their homes the people ran down from Päivävuori,
soon from every hills warning-pyres rose,
as warships crossed the waters.
