Silloin Metsolan metiset piiat
ristit riistivät rinnaltaan,
kullat kulmilta karistivat,
ja huolivat itkien Tapion linnan
mustahan murhehuntuun
ja kauvas korpehen kätkeytyivät
saunahan salaiseen.

Silloin karkkosi ihanat immet
päättyi kirjat päivyen neien,
katkesi Kuuttaren kangas,
Ja kautta ilmojen, kautta maan
soi valtava valitushuuto:
On kuollut Suomen suuri Pan,

Näin yhä Ruotsin rautatammi nousi
ja yli maan sen ylväs latva nousi
Se tammi taivon valon maasta sulki
ja yössä kaihomielin kansa kulki.

Ja hongat humisi huolissaan
Suomen salomailla
ja surua solkikoivut soi
ja huokasi korven kuuset;
hellitteli heinät vienot,
kuikutti kukat kanervan,
ahoset armahat vaikeroi
ja nurmet nuoret itki.
Ja Väinön kantelo kaiutonna
valitti kivillä rannan
ja Suomen laulu orpona, onnetonna
vieri maita, vieri soita,
vieri synkkiä saloja vaan
nääntyen näljissänsä.

Ja hiljaa hyräellen majoissansa
näin päivää kaipaellen lauloi kansa:
" Ain' on päivä paistamatta,
kuu kulta kumottamatta
näillä Väinölän tuvilla,
Kalevalan kankahilla.
Vilu viljalle tulevi,
karjoille olo kamala,
outo ilman lintusille,
ikävä inehmosille,
kun ei konsa päivyt paista,
eikä kuuhuet kumota.
Hauki tiesi hauan pohjat,
kokko lintujen kulennan,
tuuli haahen päiväyksen;
ei tieä inehmon lapset,
milloin aamu alkanevi,
milloin yö yrittänevi,
nenässä utuisen niemen,
päässä saaren terhenisen."

Ja kansan riemu seisoi vaiti vaan
oven suussa, orren alla,
murhe, itku isännöi
Väinön maassa yö.
kahlehissa kulki kansan kieli,
murtui Suomen laulun suojamuurit,
katkes kansanhengen kurkihirret,

säe IV:
Raunioiksi vajos Suomen valta.
kylvämättä kasket Kalevaisten,
Kussa taannoin kansan vilja kasvoi,
siellä huojui vaan nyt korpi kolkko;
Kaikui ruske kontioiden;
kussa ennen käkökullat kukkui,
siellä yökkö lensi, huusi huuhkain.

English translation:

Chapter X: …And the Silver Birches Sang In Sorrow

prelude:
So went the Finlands’ sage
to travel by strange waters,
so silenced the kannel of Väinö,
died the nature of the land.

verse I:
So did the sylvan maids of Metsola
rip the crosses from their chests,
lose the gold from their ears,
and miserably took refuge in the black
grief-gown of Tapios’ castle
and long into the wilds
taking to hiding in secret saunas.

verse II:
Gone were the lovely maidens,
ended the book of lady of days,
torn the cloth of Kuutar,
and through the skies, by the earth
rang a horrific groan:
Has died the great Pan of Finland,
has died the song of nature!

bridge:
This is how the iron oak of Sweden rose
and over the land rose its’ grand top.
That oak barred the light from the earth,
and so did the folk travel longing in the night.

chorus I:
And birches wailed in worry
in the woodlands of Finland
and silver birches sang in sorrow,
and sighed the pines of the wilds;
soothed the kindly hays,
whimpered the flowers of heather,
graceful glades moaned
and young grass cried.
And the kannel of Väinö, with no echo
cried at the rocks of the shore
and the song of Finland orphaned, wretched,
rang past the fields, past the swamps,
past the darkest of wilds,
merely starving in grief.

interlude:
And quietly humming in their huts
longing for day sang the people:
“Ever the day to shine,
ever the moon to light the night
here by the houses of Väinölä
here by the grasslands of Kaleva
cold cometh to the grain,
misery for the herds,
lost are the birds
troubled the men
when the days do not shine
no moon to light the nights.
pike knew the beds of streams,
great eagle the ways of birds,
the wind the goings of ducks;
no wisdom for the sons of man,
when was the dawn to come,
when the night to wilt,
at the tip of the misty cape,
at the end of the foggy lands.”

verse III:
And the peoples’ glee stood silent
at the mouth of the door, below the beams,
grief, sorrow hosted
the night of Väinös’ land.
In chains the speaking of men,
broken the bulwarks of Finnish song
shattered the ridgepoles of the spirit.

verse IV:

To ruin fell Finlands’ force,
barren the clearings of Kaleva,
where the grain of the people grew,
there swayed now cold woods;
echoed the thrashing of bears;
where the golden cuckoo hailed,
there only moths flew, owls yelled.

säe IV:
