Adrea is carried with other Windcatch prisoners past the burned ruins of Ishalem into Uraba. They are led overland on a long trek until they finally reach the Uraban capital city, where she is forced to make a new life for herself, a slave to the soldan-shah in his palace. Trapped in a strange land, Adrea fears she will never be able to go back home to her beloved Criston.
Meanwhile, Criston survives great tribulations adrift in the wreckage of the Luminara. Sea serpents circle his makeshift raft, but he clings to his need to get back home, to survive for Adrea’s sake. After many long ordeals, swept away on the ocean currents, he finally encounters a whaling ship, and is taken aboard, rescued at last. He makes his way home to Windcatch – only to find that Adrea is gone.
