H / Holmwood / The fellow-ship of the (wedding) ring
This story has an element of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ about it because a precious ring that went missing was found in the shallow waters of Lough Hyne and restored to its rightful owner. Michael Desmond from Cork took part in the SCAR Sport event in Skibbereen in October and somewhere along the 44km route managed to lose his wedding ring. It was only after he crossed the finish line at Liss Ard Estate that he realised it was missing and he immediately issued an appeal on the SCAR Facebook page. ‘I asked the organisers to keep an eye out for the missing ring. I thought it was a one in a million chance but I had to take it. Little did I think that someone would actually find it. I can’t believe it. I am so happy to have it back. And so is my wife, Mary.’

It really is a miracle. I am so glad I didn’t buy him a replacement for Christmas.’ Simon Duggan from Baltimore – who is one of the Lough Hyne Lappers swimming group – originally found the ring and entrusted it to Steve Black. It was only on Sunday morning at Lough Hyne when the lappers met up for a post Christmas party swim that Steve happened to mention it to Garry Minihane, one of the Skibbereen Charity Adventure Race (SCAR) organisers and himself a lapper. ‘I guessed straight away that the ring could be the one that Michael Desmond lost in October and got on to him straight away,’ said Garry. A description of the ring that was given by Michael matched the ring that was found and, on Tuesday, Steve Black did the necessary and drove to Cork to return the ring to a very grateful Michael Desmond. ‘What are the chances of that happening?’ asked Michael, who admitted that his initial reaction was one of utter amazement. At the time he lost it, Michael said he told his wife and she was ‘very understanding.’ When he told his mother-in-law she said she would pray to St Anthony. ‘Now,’ Michael said: ‘I’ll have to go back to mass.’ Michael has nothing but praise for the SCAR organisers: ‘In the first place,’ he said, ‘the event itself was very tough but well organised. And, in the second, they didn’t laugh it off when I issued the Facebook appeal. Their earnest response and the return of the ring is a wonderful story. It’s funny how things work out. It’s all good.’ read more: wedding dresses Teksty umieszczone na naszej stronie są własnością wytwórni, wykonawców, osób mających do nich prawa. |
