Since 1961, the US was actively developing and testing a series of manned spacecraft “Apollo” designed for the flights of three persons. Their main mission was to deliver astronauts to the Moon.
The official count of such missions was started from Apollo 4 and the launch of an uncrewed rocket vehicle Saturn.
On January 27, 1967, three weeks before the launch, there was a fatal fire during the test of a spacecraft. The victims of the disaster were astronauts Virgil Ivan Grissom (he had two travels in space), Edward Higgins White II (the first American in open space), and Roger Bruce Chaffee. The canceled mission was entitled Apollo 1 to memorize the deceased astronauts.
