The dying
Has at last abated
But the horror has seared our souls
Grim memories of the many
Haunt the minds of the few who remain

The life we'd grown accustomed to
Feels like a distant myth
Replaced by a new reality
Draped in darkness,
Cold and unforgiving.
Tainted by the fear
That though this nightmare may have ended
Another may lurk in its wake

We cannot take steps forward
Without acknowledging our past
Yet most prefer to close their eyes
Refuse to see that this was just a spearhead
The onslaught comes
We are between the strains

They are content to disregard
The ever-present threat
Until it shatters our defenses
An unseen enemy, unyielding and cruel
So how do we move on?
With the next incursion ever looming
The adversary still evolves
So must we!

Our fight will be relentless
For if we fail, humanity will be eradicated
These are not our final moments
We are never willing prey

We must refuse to disregard
The ever-present threat
It cannot shatter our defenses
This unseen enemy, irrelevant and weak
We can only prepare
For the next incursion, ever looming
The adversary will evolve
So will we!
